Flat profiles

We have accommodation options to suit everyone, including designated flats for those students with specific living preferences or requirements. Read details on each of the flat profiles to decide if one of these is right for you.

Alcohol-free flat

Living in this type of flat means that no alcohol can be consumed in the flat. This applies to all shared areas such as the kitchen and corridors. We ask for students to respect others by not allowing visitors into the flat who are under the influence of alcohol.

Students must uphold this agreement throughout their tenancy.

Kosher accommodation

We can offer accommodation that has been adapted to meet the needs of kosher students. Students living in this accommodation will have requested a kosher environment and will be expected to follow the appropriate lifestyle.

If you wish to apply for kosher accommodation, you will need to submit a letter of recommendation from your Rabbi. This will be requested once you have applied.

LGBT+ flat

This accommodation is offered as an option for students who would prefer to live, or feel most supported living with, other LGBT+ students. If you select this option from the flat profiles section of your application, we will aim to group you in one of these flats living alongside other LGBT+ students.

Applying to a LGBT+ profiled flat is entirely optional. You may still wish to apply for this type of accommodation because of your LGBT+ identity, for social reasons or practical reasons, or because you are transitioning.

We also have a number of residences that offer gender-neutral bathroom facilities, these are:

Half-board residences

Self-catered residences

Mature flat

If you are aged 21 or over, and would prefer to live with other mature students, you can request this in your accommodation application.

We will review the mature flat profile requests, and aim to group those students together according to their preferred residences.

We will do our best to ensure that your flat is made up of mature students. However, it is likely that students living in surrounding flats will be aged 18 or 19.

Quiet flat

We understand that some students would prefer to live in a quieter environment, whether it be for medical or religious reasons, to focus on their studies, or to alleviate concerns about noise from student parties.

It is important to note that we cannot regulate any external noises.

Single-sex accommodation

Living in this type of accommodation means that students will live with the same sex only. This can either be in a single-sex flat or in a room on a single-sex corridor.

If you chose single-sex accommodation, you should be aware of the following information:

  • Over 90% of students applying for single-sex accommodation are international, therefore most of our single-sex flats will consist entirely of international students.
  • Students living in single-sex accommodation can have visitors or guests of the opposite gender in their accommodation.
  • University staff or contractors of either gender may enter the accommodation from time to time; you will be given notice of this in advance.

Single-sex and alcohol-free accommodation

Our alcohol-free accommodation will also be grouped into single-sex flats for students. This means you will live with students of the same gender and follow the alcohol-free regulations that you or your guests are not permitted to drink alcohol within the flat.

How to apply to live in one of our flat profiles

If you would like to live in one of our flat profiles, you must specify this in your application in the Flat Profile section. We will use this information to offer you accommodation that is as closely matched to your needs as possible.

It is important to note that we will prioritise a flat profile request over location or room type preferences.

If you don't want to apply for any of these options, you can select No Preference in your application - please note no student will be placed in a profiled flat unless they have applied to live there.
